been getting rly into downloading music
im like, a religious firefox+adblock user so i dont have the usual complaints that end consumers have with youtube/spotify/soundcloud ads (i dont use spotify) and stuff, but i do have complaints about the youtube algorithm and feature creep and how its fucking with my ability to enjoy music
- how do you spend so long on an algorithm to have it just recommend the same 10 songs again and again in a mix
- why is everything a fucking mix or playlist now, what if i just want to listen to 1 fucking song, what happened to the autoplay toggle thats still there on my phone
as usual i hate corporate software here and i think it was seriously damaging my enjoyment of music and taste. so recently ive tried to do something about it.

vlc is great but ive been really looking for a program that will let me organise my local music library into playlists and make one click listening easier (than going into a file explorer and dragging shit into vlc). tauon has been the best ive run into on linux so far, with playlists, track sorting and an album gallery. i wish it integrated better with my desktop like other players (amarok, audacious), but its themeable! so that nice enough as far as things go. it also has a basic tag editor that lets me edit music metadata for nice categorisation which has been fun for my normal brain.

i actually mostly started building a local music library because i was getting into listening to music on my 3ds, id like to get back to that in some way since i think its a lovely device, but id also like to extend that to other devices in some way, maybe a music server? copyparty seems equal parts cool and unsettling in its existence (the dev is a backend dev that writes it on a phone and it really shows sometimes ) but maybe i can build something better for myself. for now, tauon helps me organise the collection, and im keen to play with its folder/playlist export features for it!
i think as a result of this, ive been more willing and keen to buy music (at least from bandcamp, one day ill have the brain capacity to setup an itunes so i can get more vocaloid music) and i think thats a good thing :) ive discovered some gems from artists i had passing curiosities about so i think this has done well for my listening habits.
check it
tldr download music and build a local music collection!!! support creators outside of streaming services!!!!! get a bandcamp while its still good and not totally consumed by epic!!!! i love you
